Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
